The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that your child visit a pediatric dentist by the age of one. Our caring team of dental professionals offer pediatric services for your child’s first dental visit at our office in Manchester, Connecticut.
Our pediatric dentists are trained to explain all parts of the procedures in ways that keep your child calm and comfortable. Most children are very well-behaved during the exam, but it is normal for some children to cry during parts of their visit. They can all complete their appointment with gentle, compassionate treatment and care.
Before your child’s first dental appointment, it’s a good idea to talk with them about their visit and its purpose. We recommend that during this conversation you:
- Present the visit as a positive experience.
- Avoid negative or scary words, such as “hurt,” “drill,” “pull,” “shot,” and “needle.”
- Help them understand the procedures by telling them that we will “count,” “brush,” and “take pictures” of their teeth.
- Relax! You child will likely sense your anxiety. They will respond to your calm behavior by remaining calm themselves.
Your child’s first dental visit will include a complete dental exam. This involves a dental cleaning, fluoride treatment, x-rays (if required), and a consultation with our dentist to make a plan for your child’s continued oral health.
