What Is a Dental Emergency?

There are a few different types of dental emergencies that we see at our practice. Some of the most common include:

Toothaches. A toothache is usually a sign that something is wrong, such as an infection or abscess. If you have a toothache, it's important to seek treatment right away to avoid further damage to your tooth.

Broken or Chipped Teeth. If you have a broken or chipped tooth, it's important to save any pieces of the tooth that you can and bring them with you to your appointment. In some cases, we may be able to repair the tooth. However, if the damage is too severe, you may need to have the tooth extracted.

Knocked-Out Teeth. If you have a tooth that has been knocked out, it's important to try to find the tooth and bring it with you to your appointment. In some cases, we may be able to re-implant the tooth. However, if the tooth is too damaged, you may need to have an implant placed.

What To Do in a Dental Emergency

If you have a dental emergency, the first thing you should do is call our office. We will work to get you in for an appointment as soon as possible, typically within the same day. In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to help ease your pain and keep your teeth safe:

To help ease a toothache, you can rinse your mouth with warm water and take over-the-counter pain medication.

If you have a broken or chipped tooth, it's important to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. You can also rinse your mouth with warm water and place a cold compress on your cheek to help reduce swelling.

If you have a tooth that has been knocked out, it's important to try to find the tooth and bring it with you to your appointment. In the meantime, you can rinse your mouth with warm water and place the tooth in a cup of milk.

"Great  experience. A little nervous about the dentist in the mall at first, but Andre at the front desk was friendly, welcoming and answered all my questions. Dr. Kim is excellent. He is very friendly, very smart and clearly cares about his patients. And after checking around a bit, the price was a little better than some and a lot better than others. Couldn't be happier."

- David W.

"So professional they know what they are doing.  I even had a cavity and everyone knows the worst part is needles in the mouth ...if I had these folks as a kid I wouldn’t always be so scared ...I didn’t feel a thing then I went numb.  Quick and thorough and they always want you to be comfortable throughout and with the work they do.  Expert craftsmanship is an understatement."

- Melinda T.

"Everyone in this practice is exceptionally compassionate in their care, and I’m very satisfied with the restoration of my oral health. Dr. Chi works incredibly gently, and is never judgmental, nor condescending when discussing my oral hygiene. She always takes the time to understand and respond to any question I have, and I would recommend Dr. Chi to anyone who hates going to the dentist."

- Matthew G.
